Branch Brook Park is a great local bike racing venue.
It’s even better when you ride from the race venue in Branch Brook Park over to the George Washington Bridge and then home.
Maximizing TSS with a local race
1. Warm up on the ride to the train and then from the train to the race.
2. Race hard.
3. Have a light snack, refill water bottles.
4. Ride home. This is just adding fatigue, burning calories, getting nice and empty, so you can eat a bigger meal, recover harder, and get stronger.
You know about Branch Brook, right?
Newark’s Branch Brook Park has hosted bike races for at least 50 years. The course is flat, winding, fast, and fun.
It’s also a very easy race to get to from New York City without a car. You just need to know the NJ Transit train schedule. Don’t forget directions from the trains.
And, as this typically a “training race,” you might as well put in some miles afterwards to do some more fat-burning, or just pile on the caloric deficit and make it a full day of riding.
This ride can be combined with NJ17, so you can go from Newark to the race, and then from the race to the GWB. Then home.
To Get Home…from Branch Brook to the GWB

The hill is big, but the ride is nearly over, so you can surely find the inspiration to climb it no matter how dead the legs. Despite this ride being through densely-packed suburbia, it’s actually pretty quiet. The roads don’t feel busy until the end.
